Come Fabric Shopping with me - USA and Canada edition!
Earlier this year, Terry and I headed for a USA and Canadian adventure! During that time, I also wanted to see what the different cities we were staying at offered their cosplayers in terms of fabric selections.
We started in Kansas City as we were staying with @proandconcosplay (insta & tiktok) - and honestly, the options were what I've come to know is avaliable everywhere in the states except for New York and LA which have their own fabric districts.
Not mentioned here is Walmart - I was actually SO suprised to see that Walmart had a pretty decent selection of fabric!
Then we headed to Montreal where we stayed with @dolldamage9194 and they showed us their local fabric joints!
And finally, w...

"YAY! PAIN!" Never has there been a more correct statement for me making this cosplay. I love Nifty, I love Hazbin Hotel and I love this design by Sunset Dragon. It is gorgeous! However, for a whole host of reasons, this skirt was so insanely hard to make... and I honestly couldn't give you the reason why other than everything that could go wrong, went wrong (some of it lack of planning on my b...

IT WAS SO MUCH FUN! And also - Saturday we were all Marin from My Dress Up Darling! It was a Marin-Inception. SMASH has so much to offer for attendees and I feel like this was the biggest one yet - plus...

I had the wonderful opportunity whilst I was in Montreal to have a photoshoot with SPS Photography along side, the one, the only, Doll of @dolldamage9194 . We decided on doing a Bridgerton theme shoot (specifically Season 2). I brought along my Penelope dress, and Doll made the most AMAZING Eloise outfit! She was PERFECT as Eloise! I am so thankful to both Steven and Doll - they organised this ...

I tried! | I wrote a novel in 1 month!

I tried doing something I had wanted to do since I was a kid... I wrote a story. A novel really! (Well... sort of... let me explain...) I am no where near ready to show it to the world yet, but follow me on my journey as I tick off a bucket list item. Learn about the story I wrote, where the inspiration came from, the planning (I'm not a pantser in the slightest!), the first draft, the editing ...

Where to buy fabrics in Tokyo, Japan - Nippori Fabric Town Tour | Sewist and Cosplayer Heaven!
You 100% should hit SR Harris in Minneapolis. 2 locations. Imagine a Super Wal-Mart but just every single type of fabric you could ever imagine at at least 50% off. I'm talking 100% Michael Kors wool for $10 a yard. Lace, netting, silk, wool, cotton, buttons, trims, leather, anything!!!
Well that sounds amazing! If I ever make it to Minneapolis I shall have to check it out
@KirileeCosplay I'm unsure of RUclips creator etiquette, but if you just search SR Harris on here, there's a certain circus performer who has an amazing video of the store.
Philadelphia has a historic garment/sewing district called Fabric Row! It's definitely declined in the last couple decades but still worth a visit imo :) (although I'm from Philly, so I'm very biased!)
I think I’ve heard of that! I would love to check that too!
I ordered my first cosplay being spiderman and its made out a lycra but im not sure if i can iron it or if i even need to iron lycra could you help?
Yes you can iron lyrca - try on a low heat
That pink organza is giving me some serious Bridgerton vibes.
I know XD
0:06 me: HA! Tonitex! 😂
Indeed!
So much fun! And I have Terry's HTTYD t-shirt😂
It was indeed a lot of fun
Where i live in Ohio, we have Joann's, Hobby Lobby, and Walmart . Unless you want cotton fabric and then you have a couple quilt shops
I was impressed by Walmart’s selection!
@@KirileeCosplay in the Walmart close to me, every fabric is pre-cut segments. How ever I have made renfaires skirts with the fabric
The guy at the suiting store in Toronto is great. I've chatted with him in the past. Glad you enjoyed your trip. Toronto fabric stores will often do cuts in both metres and yards but will pick one or the other for pricing. You get used to conversions. We lost a bead/button shop after the pandemic due to the construction you see at the corner of Spadina and Queen. New subway line going in.
Toronto was very interesting indeed! I didn’t know they also did metres there too
It is much the same in the US.
''Fabric is only as good as the person weilding it'' YES 👏 I fully support the fabric Pros and Cons forced you to buy, it's way to lovely 😆💖 Fabricville is somewhat acceptable but only if you have the membership card, it's way to expensive without (I prefer Club Tissu or go on Saint-Hubert street which has multiple stores in a row) As a Montrealer, I am SO JEALOUS of the Toronto stores 😭 The prices and selection are soooo much better (although they sell by the yard -_-) The silks you got look delicious. And the cannabis stores there are just a plague imo, there are WAY to many. I'm also super sad about physical stores closing more and more, we also lost many in montreal in the last decade or so and I'm sad most places closed before I learned sewing, or while I was a wee beginner cosplayer that was too shy to shop out of big brand chains. Too many shops online don't even offer samples, which I find is a huge issue and keeps me from wanting to buy from them, and even with a samples, it's hard to really get a good feel of the drape if it's something that important for a particular project. I'm someone that needs to touch all the fabrics and swoosh it around
Forgot to say I think it's so cool Terry has an eye for design! It seems so fun and useful to have a partner with that skill 😍
Yes! Terry has a very good eye for detail ^_^ Toronto was both sad and good what was still there. Some good deals still to be made
Brick and mortar fabric stores are getting harder and harder to find here in Canada. My go-to store has been open since 1961 and is closing their physical store this year. It’s really sad to see. And as someone that does majority garment sewing, finding those fabrics locally is almost impossible. It’s made a once cheaper option (buy the fabric and make my own clothing) to now being a luxury cost. It’s cheaper to buy the piece already made. I’ve taken to thrifting most of my fabric (bedsheets, table cloths, etc) to make it more affordable. 🤷🏻♀️
It’s a sad state of affairs isn’t it? Fast fashion has made making clothes a luxury.
I’m trying this and will finish by the end of the month lol
Good luck!
We went on the saturday too. Soooooo much mud this year. Last year it was too hot and sunny. I totally agree about the drop shipping and cheap crappy items. Seems alcohol was my biggest spend this year too despite also not being a big drinker. The SCA had no encampment and many of the encampments had been moved from previous years. I understand wanting to spread out the attractions but the long walk to the lists for fighting was a bit of a drag for those getting hot and sweaty in all their armor then having to treck back up the hill after. Have been trying to convince Husbeasty to get a fox skin to trim his viking coat with from that stall you mentioned and hopefully she will have some again at York later this month. You should have been given a map and schedule when you paid and collected your arm bands.
Nope- we got our wristbands and were told to enjoy ourselves. There were no maps other than I think the big one near one of the entrances.
Thank you! My kids all want personalized ribbons that they can hand out but so many companies have a minimum order of 100 each, and I just don't need that many! Now I can just make them with my kids!
Glad I could help!
Very interesting to see the stall with the fox hides - such a great idea! There is a $10 bounty here in Victoria to encourage people to reduce fox numbers. There was a bounty back in the 70’s too - Dad bought Mum a sewing machine with money from the fox bounty!I was just reading about an upcoming medieval festival to be held at Kryal Castle in Ballarat ( Victoria) in November, very tempted to go & see how it compares to your festival experience.
That's a great idea! A $10 bounty sounds good
This is definitely motivating me to keep doing mock-ups, even if they can be frustrating! Especially with ruffles. I'll get my ruffles that nice one day and mock ups can help practice it ... !! Thank you for sharing your thoughts and mock-up with us, it is really great to see this process alongside all other knowledge you are always sharing!
Thank you!
I love seeing your process! That dagger looks amazing and the skirt looks so cool so far. I love how inventive you are with the petticoats and with all the hurdles along the way. So awesome!
Thank you so much!
I think that rainbow fur is available at Spotlight!
Quite potentially!
I'm so excited seeing you making Nifty cause she was my fav the moment she came on screen and was still my fav at the end of the season 👌🔪❤🔥
Just finished the video (first comment was about 30 minutes in) and I'm so sorry you had so much trouble with the skirt, I know too well what it is to work on a cursed cosplay and how much it can affect us mentally when that happens. I really hope the upper part will go much easier 🙏
Thanks hun!!
Great work pushing through!
Yes! Thank you!
A cold Ren faire? That sounds fun, minus the mud.
The mud can go away haha
If you ever have a chance to visit one of the well established Ren Faires in America I hope you take it. I’ve been going to the Georgia Renaissance Festival for ten years. It’s been operating for nearly forty years and has a permanent site with buildings. There’s many other festivals all throughout the states, some new and some established. There’s really something for everyone.
I'm so glad that my parents really think cosplayers are cool, and my mom even wants to cosplay, so I'm going to do my 2nd ever cosplay of hatsune miku.
That’s cool
Thank you for showing all the things we need at the start of the video.
You’re welcome 😊
Hello and Love from India ❤ I am not sure if I am gonna get a reply because it’s an old vid but i am gonna try😅 i have a question for you, did you use stiff polyester net or nylon net? Because their stiffness has a huge difference and I need the answer desperately because hard polyester net is very cheap and available here but nylon hard net is expensive, they also have different hardness, by seeing your video I am assuming you have used nylon net but in a RUclips viewer comment you replied you used polyester net. I am confused, if you cleared the confusion I would be obliged ❤❤❤❤❤
Honestly, it was a stiff net - that is all I know. It was tulle that was given to me and I used it from my stash
Can you please make with opening finger caps which open from finger tips 😭
If I have a project I need to make it for I will consider it :) otherwise, use this as a base and add what is needed
Weve had charles martinet come to Australia lets hope we have tom kenny come to Australia
Will we ever see Greg page at perth oz comic con including Murray cook Anthony field Jeff fatt Sam Moran Simon pryce Emma Watkins lachy Gillespie tshaey Hawkins by themselves on stage for q&a including them together as wiggles that would be great the wiggles are Australian and oz comic con is Australian
I hear your description of the weather and I just think... Definitely not from Melbourne
A reason I could never live in melbourne
Totally get you on the fox fur trade. New Zealand also has a similar problem but ironically our problem is possums and feral cats. They kill our birds. A lot of places sell possum fur especially souvenir stores. But yea all for using fur from pests.
How long are the rods
1m and 1.25m
Hello... 🤔 Ask where you got the rods and the lengths of them? For peacock tail..
1 meter and 1.25m
Thank you so much! I want to hand out badge ribbons at my next con, but I needed them to be sequentially numbered, so I can't just order them from a place. This is going to be awesome!
Glad I could help!
I hear you on the weather! The nearest renaissance festival to me happens during the hot months. Staying hydrated is imperative to last the day! And I really hope you get to experience a more established, better organized and planned fair someday. The one I went to had so much to do and see! Glass blowing, jousting, birds of prey, mermaids!!!!
We go to Scotchish Fests here, and one year I lost my shoes in the mud😂 It was great but I know what you mean ,sorta took some of the festive fun out of it but we can't help the weather. However all booths have to be vetted to be there so no problems authenticity. Also lots of guys in kilts, yum.😅
STAB STAB
Thank you!
I recently started cosplaying but haven't fully told my mum yet. She knows i have the cosplay and i don't think shes too positive about me having a cosplay but shes allowing it (since i spent my money on it).
Do tell your mum. She already knows so it is good to be honest
@@KirileeCosplay alright thank you for the advice ❤
I have just started the video but omg I love this design!! she will suit you so good!! im really excited to watch the video
Thank you so much 😄
If you want stiff hems use horsehair braid. It adds floof and the undulating hem look.
I did :)
I made TWO petticoats using your short petticoat tutorial (ribbon and all!) last year I gave them the name "Tapa calzones 3000" (Panty-cover 3000) and absolutely loved them! Now I was looking for a tutorial on how to make a stronger and shorter petticoat to lift a high-low circle dress and make it more fluffy, and turns out you did that as well!! You're a live saver, thank you so much. 💖 Btw, I'd love to translate the tutorials I've used in Spanish while making vlogs on the cosplays I make. If I credited you both verbally in the video and linked your video in the description, would it be okay to recreate them in Spanish? 😊
I’m glad my videos helped you.
excited to see the continuation of this project :)
Thank you!
Would a paint spray gun help with the dying in the future ? I know my son used one for modelling and I have seen a RUclips channel using one, the skirt and petticoat turned out great, and all hail stabby mcstabby.❤
I have got a air brush and some fabric paint but it can be temperamental as well!

Ma'am Stabby McStabFace Stab Stab....
Excellent!
Been watching for the past year but only had the guts to comment now. When you said “I wanted to fail without evidence,” it resonated with me. I am okay at sewing but horrendous at props and sculpted accents. As a novice cosplayer, I admire your craft so much, and hearing that even Kirilee gets embarrassed sometimes means more than I can say. Thank you for continuing to show your honest and open process, every vid, every time.
Awwww thank you so much. And never feel scared to comment. I love reading them all (well, most of them ;)) Yep- sometimes we just need to allow ourselves the mental space to fail gloriously.
You carried on, go you! When I’ve been feeling like this in a project I’ve given up. So good to see you have troubles and continue, I’ll learn from you, thanks
It isn’t all sunshine and roses that’s for sure
stab stab!
Thank you!
It's such a fun skirt! Go forth and stab! 💜
Thank you!
I’m literally sitting here crying because I’ve spent the last few hours beating myself up for being fat and looking masculine. Thankyou for this video, I needed to hear something positive.
It’s all good :)
I love stretch fabric! Another tip I can give is use a walking foot. It feeds the fabric through evenly and prevents the fabric from sliding around.
Great tip!
